Stories About Belonging

Share Your Story

Do you have a great story to share about belonging in your community?

We want to hear from you!

We want to hear from people with an intellectual disability about how they take part in their community — through a paid job, being in a community sports club or part of a church or spiritual group, volunteering, friendships or living in your own home.

What should I do if I want to share my story?

Sharing your story

We want to show real life. We do not want stories that make disability seem inspirational, sad or in special programs just for people with disabilities. We want to show how you contribute in meaningful ways to your community. Your story shows the community that everyone belongs. So, if you have a great story about belonging in your community, here's what you need to do:

  1. Firstly, you need to fill out an Expression of Interest form (please click on the 'Expression of Interest form' button under 'Register and Learn More') by 31 March 2026. This tells us a bit about your story.

  2. We will look at all the forms. We will choose 10 people to share their story.

  3. If we choose your story, we will talk with you. Together, we will make a plan for your story.

  4. Your story should be about 500 to 800 words. A friend, family or Belonging Matters can help you write your story.

  5. Once you have written your story, we will ask you to take a photo of yourself.

  6. Lastly, you can send us your story and your photo. We will look at your story and give you some help if needed.

Stories are a powerful way to help people understand and see what is possible. Your story shows the community that everyone belongs.

What else do I need to know?

Your rights and privacy and consent

Your privacy and consent is important. You have the final say on what we write or share. If you like, you can use another name. We will only share your story if you say "yes".

Getting paid

We will provide a $100 gift card (or if you have an ABN, we can pay you).

Where will your story go?

We will put your story on the Belonging Matters website.

You can find further information in the 'Share Your Story' flyer, available by clicking on the below button under 'Register and Learn More'.
